Bhartrihari is a distinguished poet of Sanskrit Literature of 7th century A.D. He is popular for his Sanskrit Giti-kavya ‘Niti-Sataka’, ‘Sringara-Sataka’ and ‘Vairagya-Sataka’. Combinedly the Giti-kavya of trio is known as ‘Bhartrihari-Sataka-Traya’. Each Sataka contains One hundred Sanskrit Slokas.

In ‘Niti-Sataka’ various aspects of life such as Knowledge, Wealth, Deed, Duty, Destiny, God, Mundane Region, Noble Qualities, Good and Bad Persons with their works, Art, Literature, Music and the like have been portrayed marvellously.

In ‘Sringara-Sataka’ the poet has beautifully delineated different facets of Women, Love and Sentiment of Eros, Mundane Wealth, World in contrast with Brahman, the Almighty Supreme Being and Eternal Bliss.

In ‘Vairagya-Sataka’ detachment from worldly enjoyments, meditation and devotion towards God have been depicted. In all the three Satakas, experiences of life, hardships, struggles, downfall, deeds, success, achievements, goal of life, salvation and other related matters are observed with the humanistic approach.


Of all the three Satakas of Bhartrihari, My Complete Oriya Translations done in modern literary metres, have been published in several Puja Special Issues of ‘Bartika’, the distinguished Oriya Literary Quarterly of Dasarathpur, Jajpur, Orissa.

बिराजे ए घेनि य़ार बिचित्र मूरति ।
फुल-धनु-शर हस्ते य़ार,
से रति- कान्त            कामदेबङ्कु

शोहे चञ्चळ सरळ नयन- भङ्गिमा ।
नब बिभ्रम-          आळापे निरत

धीर गमनर माधुरी ।
परशइ य़ेबे नब य़ौबन रसभर,
हरिण-नेत्री                 शुभ-गात्रीर

य़ेते कबि-शिरोमणि,
सेमाने त सबु             बिपरीत कथा

स्वर्गाधिराज              इन्द्रादि य़ार
बशीभूत हेले बहने ।
'अबळा' - आख्या  कि परकार,
सङ्गत सेइ   अङ्गनार ?

थिले बि चन्द्र          सूर्य़्य अशेष
दीप्तिर बळे राजि ।
हरिण-लोचनी         सुन्दरी बिना
प्रतीत हुअइ परा,

घन तमिस्रे भरा ॥

बल्लभी चाहेँ        लभिबा सकाशे
प्रिय- दर्शन मातर ।
दर्शन परे प्रिया,
प्रेमालिङ्गन-       सुख लागि एका

बिशाळाक्षीर                   बक्षे बक्ष
लागिले निबिड़ नबानुरागे,
भिन्न न हेउ                 य़ुग्म शरीर
एइ आशा आम चित्ते जागे ॥

फिटिअछि य़ार अळक,

एपरि बधूर              अधर- मधु य़े
पान करे से त भाग्यबान ॥

सन्तापना,
दरशन कले            जन्माए य़ेहु

परश कले य़े                पुरुषर मने
सरजइ मोह भारि,

य़ोग्य हेब ताहारि ?

बन्धु ! ए भब-               सिन्धुरे तब
नाहिँ बुड़िबार बाञ्छा य़दि,

एकान्ते थाउ कान्ता- नदी ॥

रहिछि अङ्गनार ?

केबळ गरळ   पूरिछि हृदरे,

इतर सर्प            दंशिले सिना
नर- देहरे,
औषध बळे       चिकित्सा तार
गरळ हरे ।
दंशिछि य़ार            अङ्गे चतुर
एइ अङ्गना- भुजङ्गम,
जाङ्गळिक ता          सङ्ग तेजइ
जाणि निष्फळ परिश्रम ॥

बारिधिरे मीन- केतन,

क्षेपि अनुराग-              अग्निरे बळे
भाजि दिए निज इच्छाधीन ॥

मदन-गरब               चूर्ण करणे
मानब बिरळ धरित्रीरे ॥

जीर्ण अङ्ग चळाइ,
खण्डित माटि-
भाण्डे कण्ठ गळाइ ।
श्वान चालिथाए         अथये शुनीर
पश्चाते तरतर ;
मरिअछि से त,       ताहारे आहुरि
मारइ पञ्चशर ॥

जीबन धारणे बास्तबे पशु- बर्गर ॥

बिद्या बिदेश- गमने बन्धु निजर,
बिद्या अटइ परम देबता आबर ।
राज-संसदे बिद्या त पूजा-आस्पद ;
पूज्य नुहइ सम्पद ।
य़े जन बिद्या-बिरहित,
पशु अटइ से निश्चित ॥

दिग-दिगन्ते करइ कीर्त्ति सुबिस्तार ॥

बिघ्न-आगम भयरु,
केबे आरम्भ
न करे कार्य़्य मूळरु ।
मध्यम जन थरे आरम्भि

बिघ्न-राशिर प्रतिघाते बहु
पीड़ित हेले बि बारबार ;
उत्तम जन करे नाहिँ केबे
निज आरब्ध परिहार ॥

भोजन-दातार पुरते कुकुर
आपणा पुच्छ हलाए,
तळे पादे पड़ि भूमिपरे गड़ि
बदन उदर मेलाए ।
गजराज निज भोजन-दातारे

नाना परकार चाटु उपचार
लभि परे करे से भक्षण ॥

बिद्याबान से पण्डित ;

कुमन्त्रणारु नाश लभे नरपति,
लोक-सङ्गरु नष्ट हुअइ य़ति ।
नाश य़ाए सुत बिशेष लाळने,

कुळ नाश य़ाए थिले कुपुत्र,
खळ-सङ्गति य़ोगुँ चरित्र ।
लज्जा बिनाश लभइ मद्य-पाने,
कृषि नाश य़ाए बिना तत्त्वाबधाने ।
प्रबासे रहिले
सेनेह नष्ट होइथाए ;
प्रणय-बिहीने
मित्रभाब त नाश य़ाए ।
ऋद्धि बिनाश लभे निश्चिते
कले अनीति सेबन ।
असाबधानता रहिले दानरे
नष्ट हुअइ धन ॥

नियत रूपरे बस्तुमान,
नुहे बड़ अबा नुहइ सान ।
धनिक-जनर अबस्था एका जगतरे,
बृद्धि अथबा हानि कराए से

स्वभाब-सिद्ध गुण-निकर,

तपत लौहे पतित होइले ।
नळिनी-पत्रे रहिले से एका जळ
मुक्ता आकारे शोभा पाए ढळढळ ।
स्वाती-य़ोगे से त पाराबारे,
शामुका-गर्भे पड़िले सहसा
परिणत हुए मुकुतारे ।
अधम हेउ बा मध्यम,
अबा हेउ य़ेते उत्तम,
प्राय लभिथाए गुण सरब ;
सङ्ग-बशरु समुद्भब ॥

स्वार्थ बरजि परार्थ साधिबारे,
ब्रती सज्जन बिरळ ए दुनिआरे ।
स्वार्थ न तेजि करिथाआन्ति

स्वार्थ साधन सकाशे
अन्यर हित-बिनाशे
य़ेउँमाने सदा चेष्टित,
सेमाने मानब-राक्षस ए त निश्चित ।
अकारणे य़ेहु अन्यर
हित नाशिबारे तत्पर,
सेमाने कि नामे हेबे गणा,
आम्भरे ताहा नाहिँ जणा ॥

शरीर सङ्कुचित,
पेटिका भितरे रुद्ध उरग
निराशारे बिचळित ।
न हेबारु किछि आहार,
शिथिळ थिला त इन्द्रियराजि ताहार ।
काहुँ आसि एक मूषिक
रजनीरे साजि पथिक,
छिद्र करि से पेटिकारे पशि बहने,
आपे निपतित हेला सर्पर बदने ।
तहिँ अय़ाचित मूषिक-मांस
आस्वादि अहि तुष्ट-मानस
क्षुधा आपणार निबारि,
मूषिक-खोदित सेइ बिळ-पथे
सत्वर गला बाहारि ।
देख आहे जने ! दैब केबळ
ए बिश्वरे,
मानब-गणर बृद्धि आबर
ध्वंस करे ॥

एथिरे कि दोष बसन्तर ?
दिबसे पेचक देखि न पारे त

मेघ-माळार ?
ललाट-पटरे पूर्बरु य़ाहा
रहिछि लिखन धातार,

महाकबि कालिदास्-बिरचित् संस्कृत् काव्य ‘मेघदूत’के कोश्‌ली (सम्बल्‌पुरी) भाषाथि पहेला थर् पद्यानुबाद् करि मते बहुत् खुसि लागुछे । एभे इ काव्यके लोकसाहित्य भित्‌रे बि गन्‌ति कराय़ाइपार्‌बा । अनुबाद्के पढ़ि करि आरु शुनि करि साधारन् लोक्‌माने बि संस्कृत् श्लोकर् अर्थके सुबिधाने बुझिपार्‌बे । अनुबाद्‌ने मूल् श्लोकर् अर्थके अबिकल् ठिक् भाबे रख्‌बा लागि पूरा य़तन् कराहेइछे ।

In Indian Literature, for the first time, 
Kalidasa's 'Meghaduta' has been transcreated 
into Koshali language in my pen.
*
This Complete Lyrical Version of mine has been entirely published 
in the distinguished Literary Quarterly ‘Bartikā’, Daśaharā Special Issue, 
October-December 2003, pages 164 - 236 of Daśarathapur, Jājpur, Orissa.

As a unique lyric poem of Classical Sanskrit Literature, Kālidāsa’s ‘Meghadūta’ has internationally earned high recognitions. It has been translated into various languages of both eastern and western countries of the world.‘Kośalī Meghadūta’ has been composed with the new design of sweet melodious metre of folk-songs popular in Kośalī language of Western Orissa. From this point of view, Kośalī Meghadūta, a significant literary work of Classical Literature, can be included in Kośalī Folk Literature also.

‘Meghadūta’ embodies two parts : Pūrva Megha and Uttara Megha.
Pūrva Megha generally contains 66 ślokas and Uttara Megha 55 ślokas.
So accordingly total 121 ślokas have been translated by me into Kośali.
Some spurious or interpolated verses which appear in some editions of Meghadūta have been left here.


In Sanskrit Literature, Kālidāsa is well known as ‘Prakriti-Kavi’, Poet of Nature. His famous Gīti-Kāvya ‘Meghadūta’ deals with the love-story of a newly-married Yaksha who was appointed by his master Kubera, the Lord of Wealth, for daily collection of flowers for the worship of God Śiva. But owing to excessive attachment to his wife, the young Yaksha, negligent of his duties, was cursed by his master to bear one-year exile at Rāmagiri mountain. Separated from his newly-wed wife, he remained there. At the advent of rainy season in the month of Ashādha, he saw a big cloud at the mountain-top. Distressed with love and pangs of separation, he decided to send message to his wife for consolation in life and requested the cloud to be his messenger. By this time, he has passed nearly eight months of his exile.
In the pen of Kālidāsa, all the aspects of Nature are personified, alive and filled with emotions and feelings. In accomplishing own duty as a messenger, the Cloud has been portrayed as a younger brother and a friend of Yaksha.

Pūrva Megha, the first part of Meghadūta, depicts the route of the messenger Cloud from Rāmagiri upto Alakā city situated in Kailāsa mountain. So a geographical description with significance of various places of India is found here. Rāmagiri, Māla-kshetra, Āmrakūta mountain, Narmadā river, Vindhya mountain, Daśārna land and its capital Vidiśā, Vetravatī river, Nicha mountain, Nirvindhyā river, (Kāla-)Sindhu river, Avantī land and its capital Ujjayinī, Siprā river, Gandhavatī river, Mahākāla temple, Gambhīrā river, Kārttiteya’s abode Devagiri, Charmanvatī river, Daśapura land, Brahmāvartta, Sarasvatī river, Gańgā river, Himālaya, Krauñcha mountain, Kailāsa mountain, Mānasa Lake and Alakāpurī – all these places find attractive delineations in this Gīti-kāvya.

Uttara Megha, the second part, elaborates the beauty and prosperity of Alakā city along with the emotional message of Yaksha for his separated wife. The main Sentiment of this work is Eros, Śrińgāra Rasa, especially Love-in-Separation (vipralambha śrińgāra). However, Love-in-Union (sambhoga śrińgāra) is also observed in some descriptions of rivers, mountains and sylvan sites. Poet Kālidāsa, a devotee of God Śiva, has endeavoured here to establish the socio-cultural heritage of India with theistic and spiritual affinity.

Meghadūta of Kālidāsa is a distinguished lyric poem of Sanskrit having Śrińgāra Rasa as its prevailing Sentiment. Vipralambha Śrińgāra (Love-in–Separation) is dominated here. The hero of this kāvya is a Yaksha, who, negligent of his duties, becomes cursed and banished for one year by his master Wealth-God Kubera. The newly-wed young Yaksha, separated from his wife, resides alone at Rāmagiri to suffer the exile. On the first day of Ashādha month, he sees a big elephant-like cloud and to console his wife requests the Cloud to convey his love-message to his wife residing in Alakā city. By this time, he has passed nearly eight months of exile.

Kālidāsa, the Poet of Nature of Sanskrit Literature, has very aptly depicted this Gīti-kāvya with the inner fragrance of cultural heritage, theistic trend, national integration and natural beauty of our Motherland India.

Pūrva Megha, the first part of Meghadūta comprising 66 verses, portrays the route of Cloud from Rāmagiri to the destination Alakā city situated in Kailāsa mountain. A geographical description of India is found beautifully designed in the pen of Kālidāsa.

Uttara Megha, the second part of Meghadūta comprising 55 verses (from Śloka No. 67 to 121}, describes the beauty and grandeur of Alakā city and the message of Yaksha sent to his separated wife through Cloud. Here Yaksha gives solace to his wife and encourages her to endure patiently the pangs of separation for the remaining curse-period of nearly four months. He is said to be free from the exile on the day, when God Vishnu, after ‘Hari-Śayanī’ wakes up from his sleep; that day is popularly known as ‘Devotthāna Ekādaśī’ in the month of Kārttika. The emotional message can be heartily enjoyed with pain and pleasure by the lovers of literature.

‘Koshali Meghaduta’ has been composed with a new design of sweet melodious metre of folk-songs popular in Koshali language of Western Orissa. Thus Meghaduta, a significant work of Classical Literature, can be included as a significant work in Koshali Literature also.
